PPB Alight - Poster Ideas

I applied the branding to a poster format to see how things were looking and working with both the imagery, the font and colours

Using the symmetrical layout, I tried altering the text from Alight Music Nation, to Daylight / Twilight / Into the Night, applying colours from the imagery most appropriate for the time of day each event takes place:

I think this works quite well, but to make the 3 events more separated I would apply a different image to each one as well as the change in text and colouring...

Now they definitely look like 3 different events, yet using the same layout and colours, with slight adjustments keeps a coherency between them all, still linking them to the Alight Music Nation identity.

PPB Alight - Applying a font...

I decided to go with the Euphemia font, as it was clean and simple and I felt it worked well with the imagery I would be using. If the font was too busy then the whole piece looked messy and all over the place, therefore a simplistic typeface complimented the abstract logo. To get a better feel for the typeface and imagery together, I put together some possible brochure/programme covers:

In these designs I quite liked the offset imagery and text on the square format, rather than the standard sizing of rectangular a4 etc... However, I think this layout is dependant on that square format in order for the elements to work at these angles and settings, if that makes any sense

PPB Alight - Abstract Silhouette

I decided to go back to the abstract image I created previously, because I feel the general mood of the piece with the abstract nature and the colours, portray a stronger sense of  the arts, with the alteration of the silhouette aiding the events taking place giving the performance and musical links.

Offsetting the main image I applied some text, playing around with different fonts to see what kind of thing I wanted to go for, and what worked:

Out of this selected range I decided that a simple, san serif font worked better in contrast with the abstract, edgy image. I thought that the serif fonts and other more ornate typefaces were too busy working with the image, I felt like the image needed a calmer more straight, sharp font to accompany it....

PPB Alight - Change in direction!

After exploring and attempting to create light trails, I encountered a lot of problems making them look realistic via photoshop, therefore, whilst passion for this idea was dying rapidly, I decided to go back to a previous idea and continue with this. Originally it was a choice between the two ideas anyway, therefore, I feel satisfied that I explored this idea before ruling it out...

PPB Alight - Creating Light Trails in Photoshop

To further explore this idea I tried digitally creating the light trails:

At first I used the main venues for each event, and colours to aid the representation of the event itself...

Daylight

Twilight

Into the night
I tried applying a different technique to a different type of image:

After exploring self created and digitally created versions, I wasn't sure that the light trails were going in the right direction...

PPB Alight - Light Trails

After feedback sessions I have decided to explore the idea of using Light Trails as the branding further, to get a better feel for what I wanted to achieve I looked at other peoples work to see what could be achieved:

! Use around people? !

! Could use different objects for the events? !

PPB Alight - Feedback

The feedback session with tutors showed that the abstract silhouette design worked a lot better than the original drawing, as it wasn't as harsh and busy in appearance as it was more abstract and the colours were softer.

The feedback from the light trails idea showed the concept to be quite strong however a lot of work needed to be done in exploring the possibilities and execution of this idea, bringing some concept to the images used.

PPB Alight - Photo Edits

To enhance the light in the photo's I'd taken I editted them in photoshop, adjusting the colouring, brightness and contrast mostly.

PPB Alight - Idea Development

The inspiration for this idea came from Slow Shutter Speed Photography, resulting in light trails in photos. I had a few accidental pictures myself, and tried taking some more.

I felt that these kinds of photos really capture energy and would be appropriate for Alight as a festival, they're uncontrollable and dynamic, the lights having connotations of celebration and emphasising the name of the festival Alight!
